Key to win #2: Rekindle the friendship to ease the awkwardness. But… DO NOT enter the friend zone. Key to win #3: Ignore the fact that she went speed dating the night before. Take it as good a sign—maybe she’s looking for a relationship. Key to win #4: Attempt to keep the two of you out of the town gossip blog and away from your large family. Make sure you don’t let this last one throw you off your mission. Key to win #5: Don’t get deterred when you find out the past is about to repeat itself. Because the man she met at the speed dating night is your best buddy from work. Just remember, you sat back and let her slip away once, you won’t do it a second time. Failure is not an option. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first anthology of youth plays from Gaza and the wider Palestinian region, this timely collection ties together nineteen plays produced by Theatre Day Productions, one of the foremost community theatres in the Middle East. Written by playwright Jackie Lubeck, this collection responds to the siege on Gaza and the Israeli military operations from 2009 to 2014, reflecting how Gazan youth deal with trauma, loss and urban destruction. In the nineteen plays within this anthology, the reader and theatrical producer witnesses experiences of a forgotten youth, besieged by a silent international community and a brutal wall. The plays are arranged into five different thematic series, which include family entanglements, loss and the fundamental goodness and resourcefulness of human beings.
Download or read book INTERLANGUAGE PRAGMATICS OF INVITATION written by Lestari Ambar Sukesti and published by Rasibook. This book was released on 2014-10-20 with total page 527 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding grammar does not guarantee speaking or making utterances appropriately (Cohen, 1996; Thomas, 1983). As pragmatics differs from one culture to other second or foreign language, learners should acquire the sociopragmatics and pragmalinguistic rules of the foreign or second language to enable them to make communication effectively with native speakers. Miscommunication often occurs due to incident that people make use of the rules of their native pragmatics to express intention in other culture without realizing the difference between these two cultures (Thomas, 1983). Error in grammar could be tolerable but inappropriateness will affect the communication outcomes. The conversation may lead to an awkward situation which is not realized by the learners of the language. Invitation is a part of speech acts, which reflects the actualization of an illocutionary intention of a speaker through utterances, either spoken or written. The speech act of invitation emerges when someone asks somebody else to attend to a kind of occasion, usually the one that is hosted by the inviter. Suzuki’s findings in his research on making invitation by native American undergraduate students describe 2 different strategies, namely; Want (W) and asking for Willingness (AW), however based on the writer’s findings in her research on interlanguage pragmatics of invitation by Indonesian EFL learners, there are three more strategies in making invitation, namely; Performative (P), Imperative (I), and Hoping (H). Gender also influences in making inviting strategies based on social status and familiarity, including the use of deference or solidarity markers. Male participants use more various solidarity markers especially when the invitation is addressed to female invitees. It might happen as male participants try to touch the invetee emotionally and keep close to the invetees. Both male and female participants tend to verbose. The more descriptors in the scenarios the more explanations the participants use in inviting others. However, the most significant finding is that female participants is said to adopt more performative (P) and hoping strategy (H) in all situations. Female participant is considered expectant to the invitation to be fulfilled by the invetees. The contribution of distance, power, and rank of imposition to the way the participants elicit their politeness strategies was also found in this study. When there is a distance between the inveter and the invetee the participants make different ways in making inviting strategies. However, in the realm of pragmalinguistics, the participants cannot differentiate the use of neutral and polite strategies while addressing the invitation to higher level of the invetees. It is found out in the use of willingness neutral and imperative strategies by the participants to invetees who are of higher status. It might due to the lack of pragmatics knowledge of the participants toward the language.

Book excerpt: In January 2004, daytime television presenters Richard Madeley and Judy Finnigan launched their book club and sparked debate about the way people in Britain, from the general reader to publishers to the literati, thought about books and reading. The Richard & Judy Book Club Reader brings together historians of the book, literature scholars, and specialists in media and cultural studies to examine the effect of the club on reading practices and the publishing and promotion of books. Beginning with an analysis of the book club's history and its ongoing development in relation to other reading groups worldwide including Oprah's, the editors consider issues of book marketing and genre. Further chapters explore the effects of the mass-broadcast celebrity book club on society, literature and its marketing, and popular culture. Contributors ask how readers discuss books, judge value and make choices. The collection addresses questions of authorship, authority and canon in texts connected by theme or genre including the postcolonial exotic, disability and representations of the body, food books, and domesticity. In addition, book club author Andrew Smith shares his experiences in a fascinating interview.

Download or read book Best Friends written by Terri Apter and published by Harmony. This book was released on 2010-02-10 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Best Friends provides the missing link to understanding and recognizing the impact of some of the most important relationships in girls' and women's lives. Every woman remembers the sting of betrayal of a girlfriend, and every parent of a daughter has seen her come home from school in tears because a girl she thought was her best friend suddenly and inexplicably became her enemy. While boys hash out differences with fists and kicks, girls' societies are marked by secrets and whispers and shifting affection. The lessons learned as an adolescent girl are often carried into adulthood, making women fear confrontation--especially with other women. But the intensity of the struggles reflects the support and healing to be found within these friendships. Girls find themselves in the mirror of other girls, hence the power each has to influence the other. Ruthellen Josselson and Terri Apter's many years of working with hundreds of girls and women have given them insight into the emotionally important relationships that are integral to a girl's self-image. Best Friends explores the bonds of friendship between girls and between women and the sorrows and joys they experience together, from early adolescence and throughout their lives.

Download or read book Some of My Best Friends written by Tajja Isen and published by Doubleday Canada. This book was released on 2022-05-03 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fearless and darkly comic essay collection about race, justice and the limits of good intentions from the editor in chief of Catapult. In this stunning debut collection, award-winning voice actor and cultural critic Tajja Isen explores the absurdity of living in a world that has grown fluent in the language of social justice but doesn’t always follow through. These nine daring essays explore the sometimes troubling and often awkward nature of that discord. Some of My Best Friends takes on subjects including the cartoon industry’s pivot away from color-blindcasting, the pursuit of diverse representation in the literary world, the law’s refusal to see inequality, and the cozy fictions of nationalism. Throughout, Isen deftly examines the quick, cosmetic fixes society makes to address systemic problems and reveals the unexpected ways they can misfire. In the spirit of Zadie Smith, Cathy Park Hong and Jia Tolentino, Isen interlaces cultural criticism with her lived experience to explore the gaps between what we say and what we do, what we do and what we value, and what we value and what we demand.
